Croeso i Flwyddyn 2!
Welcome to Year 2!
Welcome to the Y2 website page. Please visit our year group page regularly to keep up with the latest news and information!
Our topic this half term is called Cardiff Tales. We will be learning about where Cardiff is, its importance as the capital city of Wales and the many things that you can do there. The children will explore the unique landmarks and features it has, special events that take place there, and how it is similar or different to Barry. As part of the topic we will also be going on a school trip to explore Cardiff Castle and the famous Animal Wall on Wednesday 18th March 2020. Please see Parent Pay to sign consent and make a payment.
Also, as part of our topic, the children will develop a wide range of Literacy skills. They will be reading and listening to a selection of different Roald Dahl stories, writing a range of different genres, including writing story writing, wanted posters, comic strips, fact files and character descriptions. In order to develop their oracy (speaking and listening) skills they will also have the opportunity to take part in hot seating activities where they will take the role of different characters from the stories.
You can also find this half term's homework activities attached below.
This half term the children will be learning about Money and Time. During their work on Money they will be exploring the different coins, carry out simple shopping additions and calculating change. They will also be carrying out problem solving, including money. The Time topic will include learning to tell the time on an analogue clock (o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to) and matching these to their digital equivalents. Both of these topics are very practical and it would be great if you could support your child by giving them practise at home.
In addition, to support your child at home, use the link below to find a range of Maths activities:
Every Monday your child will be given a new spelling list which they will be tested on the following Friday. We encourage the children to practise their words daily using their spelling practice sheet. It would be helpful to your child if you would 'sound out' these words phonetically: e.g. s-p-l-a-sh.
The children are encouraged to read books at home and are asked to regularly return their books when they've completed them. We change the reading books on a Friday so please ensure that all books are returned in the school book bag before then.
In Y2, P.E. is on a Wednesday. We would be very grateful if you could make sure that your child has suitable kit in school (shorts and t-shirts and suitable footwear), clearly labelled with their name and that it is returned to school after each half term.
The children are provided with healthy, mid-morning daily snacks. We would be grateful if you would send £7 each half term to cover the costs.
Year 2 Kerb Craft
The children will be starting the Road Safety programme called Kerb Craft on Wednesday 8th January. Each Wednesday the children will be taken out of school in small groups in order to develop and increase their awareness when crossing roads.
