Croeso i Flwyddyn 2!
Welcome to Year 2!
Welcome to the Y2 website page. Please visit our year group page regularly to keep up with the latest news and information!
TOWERS, TUNNELS AND TURRETS
Our topic this half term is called Towers, Tunnels and Turrets. We will be learning about Towers, bridges and amazing structures; Castles and castle life and living things and their habitats. We will carry out a number of investigations throughout the term, such as testing the strength of a castle wall when we take aim with a variety of different projectiles! We will meet Rapunzel who lives in a tower and we will be building the tallest tower we can for her.
Also, as part of our topic, the children will develop a wide range of Literacy skills. They will be reading and listening to a selection of different fairy tales, writing a range of different genres, including letters, job application forms, postcards and descriptive writing. In order to develop their oracy (speaking and listening) skills they will also have the opportunity to take part in hot seating activities where they will take the role of different characters from the stories.
You can also find this half term's homework activities attached below.
While your child is working from home
When we return after the Easter holidays our new topic will be 'Wriggle and Crawl' where we will be learning all about mini-beasts. Whilst you are at home during this time get a head start on our new topic.
Below you will find a sheet filled with activities to keep you busy. How many activities can you complete?
This half term the children will be investigating 2D and 3D shapes. We will be learning the names, properties and constructing our own 3D models. We will also be learning about tessellation and symmetry. When we study Towers the children will be developing their skills in measuring to calculate, sort and order different heights.
In addition, to support your child at home, use the link below to find a range of Maths activities:
Every Monday your child will be given a new spelling list which they will be tested on the following Friday. We encourage the children to practise their words daily using their spelling practice sheet. It would be helpful to your child if you would 'sound out' these words phonetically: e.g. s-p-l-a-sh.
The children are encouraged to read books at home and are asked to regularly return their books when they've completed them. We change the reading books on a Friday so please ensure that all books are returned in the school book bag before then.
In Y2, P.E. is on a Wednesday. We would be very grateful if you could make sure that your child has suitable kit in school (shorts and t-shirts and suitable footwear), clearly labelled with their name and that it is returned to school after each half term.
The children are provided with healthy, mid-morning daily snacks. We would be grateful if you would send £7 each half term to cover the costs.
Year 2 Kerb Craft
The children will be starting the Road Safety programme called Kerb Craft on Wednesday 8th January. Each Wednesday the children will be taken out of school in small groups in order to develop and increase their awareness when crossing roads.
