Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Croeso i Flwyddyn 1!

This term our topic is Paws, Claws and Whiskers. We are excited to step into our class Vets and Pet Shop, to explore and care for different pets; creep though the jungle as we explore the patterns, colours and movements of different jungle animals; hop on to the internet and research all about animal habitats... and much much more!

Our Literacy will be based around a range of fiction and non-fiction books, where we will develop our reading, writing and oracy (speaking & listening) skills.

We will be focusing on a range of Numeracy skills throughout the term including: reading and writing numbers to 20, counting reliably to 20, exploring double facts as well as calculating addition and subtraction problems. We would appreciate it if you could practise these at home with your children in order to consolidate the skills that are being taught.

PE is every Thursday afternoon. Please ensure your child has appropriate kit in school, which is clearly labelled with their name. You can purchase a Holton Primary PE bag from the school office. Kit is to be kept in school and will then be sent home at half term.

Your child will be given a designated reading day. Please ensure that their reading book and yellow diary is brought to school on this day in order for a new book to be sent home. We ask that you read with your child at home and help them with any 'tricky words'.

Homework will be sent home every Friday. This will be stuck in the blue homework book. It is expected to be completed and returned to school for new homework to be given the following Friday. We would love to read any comments that you have written about how hard the children worked!

Every week we will send home spellings for you to practise with your child throughout the week. These will then be tested on Fridays during our weekly Spelling Time session. Remember to 'sound out' these words phonetically, i.e. "c-a-t, cat!" "f-i-sh, fish!"

Look out for updates on our class Twitter page (@holton_year1)! Please speak to your child's class teacher if you have sent a follow request so that they know who each username belongs to! There will be photographs, videos and posts all about the learning that has been going on in Year 1... you do not want to miss this!

Can we also remind you that £7 snack money is due every half term.

Thank you for your continued support,
